In this novel, Stuart Evans is again concerned with a society fighting against a pernicious disease which is at once moral and political. The novel begins arrestingly with the thoughts and fears of a political leader who has been kidnapped by terrorists and the nightmare of this man's experience punctuates the nine sections of the book, which explore the lives of three radicals facing political disillusion at a time of personal turmoil. Hanover is cynical and amoral, malevolent and vengeful; Maddox's disgust about the London he lives in is matched only by his self-contempt; Hampden's genial altruism is tainted by the collapse of his own and his daughter's marriage. Although the three men's lives touch only peripherally, the intricately woven story explores through them and their friends and families different aspects of the same predicament: that of loyalty to ideals and self-interest.
The novel displays Evans's structural command of his material and stylistic versatility which his readers have come to expect. As well as the manifold ironies of the events which befall his characters, there is, too, the coolly sardonic commentary on left-wing theorists from the thirties to the summer of 1980 set down in the novels of Hanover and Maddox. The temporary hearths tenanted by the characters in the novel are moral and spiritual as well as material. Temporary Hearths is the third, pivotal novel in Stuart Evans's 'Windmill Hill' sequence (see back of jacket for reviews of the earlier books).
