H Berlioz – La Damnation de Faust
This production, recorded at the Salzburger Festspiele, was the winner of the Vienna TV Award 2000. It is presented in an anamorphic 16:9 transfer with PCM stereo and Dolby Digital 5.1 sound. It has a huge, original, inventive and dramatic production, with an equally huge sound that literally shakes the walls when the chorus appears on the stage.

Krzysztof Prenderecki – Seven Gates of Jerusalem
Presented in anamorphic 16:9 with PCM Stereo and Dolby Digital 5.1 sound. The performance is conducted by the composer. The features on this DVD include an interview and a profile of the composer, a running commentary by the composer recorded in the subtitles, and a synchronous score that can be brought up on the screen during the performance. The performance sounds electric.

In summary, an excellent selection of recent releases from the Arthaus Musik label which in conjunction with the first sampler (reviewed here by Michael Brooke), will give a good overview of their catalogue and a cheap and useful introduction to anyone who might be interested in exploring classical music on DVD. Having opera presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 and anamorphic widescreen, I doubt I will ever buy another opera on the more expensive and much inferior CD format.
