Neil Mackie, tenor; Barry Tuckwell, horn; Scottish Chamber Orchestra/Steuart Bedford [with other works of Britten].

Neil Mackie is a conscientious and convincing interpreter of this music, with a voice that sounds eerily like that of Pears, not surprising in view of the fact that he studied with Pears for 14 years. Mackie actually excels his teacher in certain areas, including accuracy of pitch and diction. But while his approach is very much in the Pears manner, and admirably sensitive, his voice lacks the rich, baritonal underpinning that characterized Pears', and can sound somewhat tight in the upper range, where Sir Peter was at his best. Still, the points are well made, and the recording offers a number of less well known treasures from Britten's remarkable output of songs and occasional pieces. – Ted Libbey, author of The NPR Guide to Building a Classical CD Collection.

Some of Britten's richest vocal chamber pieces, by splendidly idiomatic performers are followed on disc 2 by slightly less exceptional orchestral performances. Still, very good value.
