Superb Offering from This Grossly Underrated Comp
June 24, 2013 By Richard F. Buckley (Jefferson Hills, PA)
"This 2 disc set is a must for all lovers of classical music! If you are not a rabid fan of Borodin before you hear it, you will be after you hear it. All three of his great symphonies are included plus several excerpts from Prince Igor as well as his String Quartet No. 2 and others of his fabulous repertoire. The String Quartet is notable not only because it is brilliantly presented by the fine Borodin Quartet (who else?), but by the fact that two of its movements were the inspirations for popular songs: the Notturno, "And This Is My Beloved," and the Scherzo, "Baubles, Bangles and Beads." Sir Georg Solti and the London Symphony Orchestra radiate in their powerful performance of the popular Prince Igor, and Jean Martinon leads the same orchestra in a dazzling performance of Borodin's Symphony No. 2. Other featured musicians are Vladimir Ashkenazy with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and L'Orchestre de la Suisse Romande led by Ernest Ansermet. All of the works on this two disc set are outstanding and are sure to please you immensely. Very highly recommended."
