This collection of Portuguese string quartets, all composed during the third quarter of the twentieth century, is notable in that it appears on the Etcetera label from the Netherlands; not a "major" label, certainly, but a vigorous concern, mostly specializing in early music and distinct from the usual outlets for contemporary music. The production values for these performances by the Arditti Quartet, recorded in Lisbon in 1999, are accordingly higher than normal for such releases, and the music benefits. Especially nicely recorded is the final work on the album, Eugénio Manuel Rodrigues' Mata Hari. The work is influenced by the image of the Dutch-Indonesian exotic dancer named in the title, by Portuguese folk traditions, and by the rigorous writing of Louis Andriessen, one of Rodrigues' teachers. The final bars, in which the players have to hum and play their instruments at the same time, are lovely, and the entire work is fresh and unencumbered by the various schools of the time. The other works on the album rely to a greater or lesser extent on the abstract conceptions so much in vogue at the time (although none is serially organized). Perhaps the most interesting is the Monodia -- quasi un requiem of António Pinho Vargas, with its quasi-vocal gestures. A diverse collection of pieces from a small country that produced an impressive variety of strong compositions during the last century; of interest beyond academic circles.
