This choir made its first appearance on this label with two Masses of Alonso Lobo (26:5), so the new disc represents a continuation of their focus on lesser-known Siglo de Oro composers. For an even more obscure composer of the era, we now have the third Mass in quick succession of Sebastian Vivanco (c. 1551?1622), following Missa Beata Maria in the collection ?Esperanza? (29:2) and Missa In manus tuas (27:1). This superb performance makes a convincing case for Vivanco?s place in his own time, raising the question why it took so long to restore him to audibility. Just before Michael Noone?s disc (the earliest of these three) appeared, I was asked to compile a list of Vivanco?s four best recordings. The list of four single motets that I furnished virtually exhausted the composer?s entire discography, omitting only one disc (and that one available only in Spain and duplicated later anyway).

When I reviewed Trendell?s Lobo disc, I didn?t realize that he had recorded at least one earlier disc of Taverner and Byrd, since the British catalog had perversely indexed it under ?London? instead of ?King?s,? and he has recorded for other labels as well. But for a choir that was begun in 1945 and has long since won considerable respect, its sudden prominence must be attributed to David Trendell, who took charge in 1992. Of the three Vivanco Masses, there is a vast difference between the two more recent discs that use a fairly large a cappella choir and Michael Noone?s vocal ensemble with orchestra (admittedly, a small instrumental ensemble, but that?s what he calls it). If it?s possible to admit that the Siglo de Oro heard church music both ways (I?m not sure the proponents of instruments will agree), the sound of these two choirs appeals to me very much. This would not be true if the results heard on the two discs were not as fine as they are. If you have not heard Vivanco yet, this disc will be an illuminating experience.
